I was trying to paint a picture today, but seems the color i was using was just a pigment of my imagination...

while being rigid and scientific information based managed to keep the softness of the rabbit's fur, for that might well be the most important piece of information that we really want to know about that rabbit.

Albrecht Durer - The dutch detail master

Durer is the master of details. I have found that in writing this short articles I have crowned many artists as 'masters' which might seem cheapen the title, but first it is really not my fault they were all so good in what they did, second why should I write about anyone who is less than a master in his craft? These are all figures that have influenced me, and I don’t tend to waste my time looking in mediocre places for inspiration, and third each one of them was a master of one part of the craft. Albrecht Durer was the master of detail.

If a man devotes himself to art, much evil is avoided that happens otherwise if one is idle."

The first etching by Durer I saw was of the famous brown rabbit, and I remember being stuck in front of it for a good couple of minutes admiring the finish, the elaborated work of the etcher, the precision that while being rigid and scientific information based managed to keep the softness of the rabbit's fur, for that might well be the most important piece of information that we really want to know about that rabbit.

It was as if there was really a rabbit there. Not a tridimensional illusion of a rabbit, but a real rabbit. The essence of a fluffy funny nosed brown rabbit. That is the Durer magic, and that comes through the details. God is in the details? Well then Durer painted god. Every time.
What beauty is, I know not, though it adheres to many things.

Sane judgment abhors nothing so much as a picture perpetrated with no technical knowledge, although with plenty of care and diligence. "

The second place you can see this incredible talent is in the big multi character etching scenes, where the details give you the full story. Any liar, or story teller for that matter, knows that the details are what give a 'fib' the credibility it needs. And Durer used that concept to create religious scripture scenes that looked almost credible. Not just a bunch of faces staring in awe, it was a mix of personalities, of reactions, of body language.

I usually prefer looking at the black and white etchings Durer did, which is a bit of a shame as his color masterpieces are really quite amazing and incredibly impressive, but it is in the black and white, in the sketch, that I can really enjoy all the details, without being distracted by the overall impact that color always brings.

And since geometry is the right foundation of all painting, I have decided to teach its rudiments and principles to all youngsters eager for art”

I can get lost in one of these thin lines beautifully composed plates for hours. It is not even one story, it is ten stories folded in one, and that is only the background, not even the main story.
God is in the details.
and Albrecht Durer made him proud.

As I grew older, I realized that it was much better to insist on the genuine forms of nature, for simplicity is the greatest adornment of art.
