I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like deniro. Now, normally that is not a good thing, if there is a consensus you are good you must be doing something wrong, but in his case ? he is Robert Deniro.
Robert Deniro is one of those stars that all the men want to be and all the women want to be with. I know it is a cliché but hey, it's f#$$ng Robert Deniro. He has surpassed the cliché , he passed it a long time ago, honked twice and went straight on to the pantheon of living legends being the best Robert Deniro there ever was.
There is a certain combination of anarchy and discipline in the way I work.”
For me, Deniro has two forms of existence, funny and explosive. An extremely flammable substance that Deniro. Extremely likeable but very unstable. And that is wonderful. You are either laughing or crying in fear, and these two conditions are very similar on the lowest level of our consciousness .
did you ever kill anybody?
…well, I hurt sometbody's feeling once"
Look at all his roles. He is either wonderfully entertaining or boiling and waiting to erupt. And the truth? I don’t know which one I prefer. I mean, the hot volcano Deniro is great, but when he is funny he is just, I don’t know, maybe it’s the relief he is not going to shoot you, but it just works. I even love the Ben stiller movies. (well, the first one…)
Deniro was one of the old generation method actors, and it showed. Now in his case it was even more of a challenge as he is definitely not a cameleon type actor that just slithers into his new character. After all , he is Robert Deniro, and that is something that you can't hide. So every time he acquires another character, it is just another facet of Deniro we haven’t seen before. Like a diamond, different from every angle but still essentially the same, essentially always true to what it is, and that my friends, is a real actor.
The characters that I play are real. They are real so they have as much right to be portrayed as any other characters.”
I will not even try to go over his films. There's no point, there are so many of them. And it is not exactly that he needs to work. Well, not for the money. But he needs to work. Needs. Because that what an actor does. Act.
Better to be a king for a night than a schmuck for a lifetime."
Deniro is not a star. Not somebody to idolize for his fame and fortune. He should be idolized because he symbolizes what good acting is. What being an actor is. And that is why he is still as popular as ever, still as admired. Deniro is one of the hardest working people in show biz. And proud of it. He is an example to behold.
Juliette Lewis put it best in the AFI life achievement awards for Deniro: Thank you for an endlessly inspiring career.
You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Then who the hell else are you talkin' to? You talkin' to me? Well, I'm the only one here. Who the fuck do you think you're talking to?"
