On the big screen everything looks majestic, grand, out of this world. add some popcorn and you have your escapism shot.

My purpose is to make a movie to make you warm. To give you some heat.
Now, this rational world has become a place where only what is cool is good. Do you cut the movie on the basis of the beat of modernity or the basis of the beat of your own heart?"

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

Emir Kustiruca - unza unza time

You got to love Emir Kusturica. If you don’t, you probably don’t drink enough, and god forbid you might even actually have a decent job. But not loving Kostunica is not loving life, on its filthiest, most absurd, most romantic, most unstable aspect, real life.

I fell in love with kusturica's worker at a relatively late age of my cinematic education, when I was nearing my thirties, and although I knew his work before that period it was the music that brought me back to him and to that love, no better name for it, for his creations, whether cinematic or musical.

I vaguely remember seeing "father's business trip" when I was young, (my brother was a cinema student at the time and the house was full of quality films in that old forgotten VHS format.) and I distinctly remember being moved. maybe shaken is a more accurate word for it. It was not an easy experience, but than again, none of the experiences that really mean anything are.

In Serbia a lot of people hate me because they want to westernise, not understanding that the western world is bipolar, with very good things and very bad things. Since they don`t have experience of the west, they even believe that western shit is pie. "

Kusturica knows exactly what hs is doing, and although the end result might look more like organized chaos than a motion feature, it is not only well organized but weaved together in skillfull dramatization and editing which are second to none.

When he was asked by the british censor to cut two seconds of his film, a glimpse of a scene showing a cat eating a dead pigeon, he replied in a very kusturica manner , writing an official response that said :

I will not cut my film because, because, because, because of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. "

That  seems to sum up the kusturica spirit, the force of nature which is knowing when bullshit is bullshit and when to stand your grounds. To the guardian reporter covering the story he said -
"I just don't get it. The pigeon was already dead, we found it in the road. And no other censor has objected. What is the problem with you English? You killed millions of Indians and Africans, and yet you go nuts about the circumstances of the death of a single Serbian pigeon. I am touched you hold the lives of Serbian birds so dear, but you are crazy. I will never understand how your minds work."

The man stands between life and death. The man thinks... The fish is mute. expressionless. The fish doesn't think, because the fish knows everything. The fish knows everything.”

I will never understand how his mind works, but I am thankful it exists and that it keeps on creating these mirror images of our lives, doesn’t matter if they are in a Serbian village or the new York village, a moment of not so pretty truth we have the privilege to be spectators to.

Kusturica is a symbol of a country torn apart by war, a country so handicapped by its inner turmoil, so full of scars and feats of survival, it seems the only real escape is the imagination, and kusturica is not one to be subtle about it or even remotely polite.

In one of his more elegant short films, the farmer who's land has been cut of from the world by neighbors which have become to be enemies, is dreaming of being a bird, of being able to leave his house, and fly over the hostile terrain which surrounds it from all sides. It seems a bit too simplistic, a bit to cliché' when you first think about it, but it works on so many levels that you cant help but feel that pain of displacement inside your own house, that eternal refugee status in your own backyard. Cliché' it is not.

I`m fed up with democracy. In a democracy, people vote for the mayors. I wanted to build a city where I will choose the citizens. "

Kusturica was often attacked for being part of the propaganda machine, showing a one sided view of the violent story, but in the end of the day he just shows what he knows, what he lives, what he feels. If anything, these films are a multi-sided view on life in general, of what we are like as humans, and espacialy what we are like as humans when no one is looking and when we need to survive. It does stretch the canvas a bit. And it should.

Other than being one of my all time favorite directors, kusturica is a global treasure as he is holding the flag of humanity up high, and although it is a dirty torn flag that has seen too much, it is still humanity at its best, or at least at its funniest, and that is really something to thank him for.

oh yeah, and he won a lot of prestigious prizes. Right, like he cares...
