Spinal Tap – Rockmockumentary

There are very few movies that manage to take an industry and masterfully mock it in a very subtle and clever way, almost without letting the audience know it is mocking and not documenting. Spinal Tap is not one of those films.
Oh no, there is nothing subtle about Spinal Tap.

I can't write this article without having to giggle once in a while just thinking of some of the stupid silliness of Spinal Tap. Well, at least giggle when I am not busy humming some of their greatest..eh…hits?

May I start by saying how thrilled we are to have you here. We are such fans of your music and all of your records.
I'm not speaking of yours personally,
but the whole genre of the rock and roll."

The y did put the effort in actually creating a band. A superband. Well, it was super stupid, which was exactly what they meant to do. Stupid sells. Look at the music industry these days, yes, the real industry, not the mock documentary film one. Stupid sells. And they are very good at being stupid. Coming from the UK they would probably call it silly, but it is the same think. And I do mean stupid in a good way of course.

It's such a fine line between stupid, and uh..."

I think I saw spinal tap at least thirty or forty times. Most of them under the excuse of showing it to somebody else, but I did sneak a couple of private viewing myself. It's the kind of rock documentary that is always good to have around. And it is of course the best mrockumentary ever made. (that is mock+rock+documentary. A world I am sure Nigel would be delighted with)

Rob Reiner was never a light weight. But in Spinal Tap he proved himself to be the comic genius he showed promise of. He peaked, and to our great delight this was the beginning of a wonderful and fertile career. This is actually where it all started, where Reiner found his wings and start honing on his true voice, his style. And that, my friend, makes Spinal Tap an historical monument. Nothing less.
The fact Reiner was also a co-writer of the lyrics, brought the songs to immediate immortal cult status, and I have not seen better rock poetry since.

Spinal Tap is a classic. It was a classic the minute it came out, and it will always be. With fellini, with Scorsese, with Hitchcock. It is spinal tap. A school of mockumentary cinema, masterfully planned and executed, hilariously written and unforgettable. And not in a good way….
Ladies and gentleman I give you… Spinal Tap!

Dozens of people spontaneously combust each year. It's just not really widely reported."
