I was trying to paint a picture today, but seems the color i was using was just a pigment of my imagination...

Gervais found the formula. His formula. The loser role is one that is adopted by many comedians, on many levels, but to make it work you need to own it. And he doesn’t only own it. He own its friends and it’s neighbors and the loser role has 'Ricky's bitch' tattooed on his back.

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

Ricky Gervais - The Neo-Brit

He is funny. No doubt about it. And he is British, no doubt about it.
but he is in no way an example of what we know as British humor. I am not saying it is not British humor, but it is not what we grew up on. It’s a New Britain and a new humor.

I don't do enough for charity. I do it a bit, you could always do more, but I look at it like this... it's a pain, isn't it?

I often find Gervais painful to watch. The only other person which gives me the same sense of discomfort is Larry David (a couple of weeks ago Gervais did a cameo appearance in 'curb your enthusiasm' and I squirmed so much I had to upholster the whole damn chair. But it was worth it. )

When we talk about a "sit-com" we immediately think of cheap shot ready-made surroundings and prefabricated storylines repeating in a vortex of mediocrity. But sit-com just means situation comedy, and as Gervais does not possess the wit of black adder, the physical presence of Basil Fawlty, or even the timing of Paul eddington, what is left is the situation. And this is his strong side.

(On Stephen Hawking ) : He's not a genius, he's pretentious. Born in Kent and talks with an American accent!

Gervais manages to arrange situations which are …well, horrible, most of them. Humiliating, damaging, disgusting and completely hilarious. And this by the way, is the whole idea behind the series 'an idiot abroad' which was a Gervais extension , as he sends an unwilling unable 'ambassador' to complain in different parts of the world. The destinations and tasks were chosen in what seems like juvenile cruelty, but after watching the whole serious you realize that it was actually…well…ok, it was juvenile cruelty. But it worked.

Let's say that if I was Gervais' friend and knew he was planning a practical joke on me? I would go into a witness protection program.
I shudder just thinking about it.

Where there's a will-there's a relative!”

And that is his secret. Fear. I have come to the conclusion that Ricky Gervais is a terrorist. He feeds on you fear. Your profound terror. No…don’t do that…please… I can't look… the skin crawls. (you can imagine your favorite Gervais moment, from the office, or extras to understand exactly what I mean)

Pol Pot - he rounded up anybody he thought was intellectual and had them executed. And how he told someone was intellectual or not was whether they wore glasses. If they're that clever, take them off when they see him coming!”

If George Costanza used to do things that are unspeakable in normal society, at least he had the decency to do them on purpose, while Gervais manages to actually BE that horrible person, never realizing what is not ok, and why people are upset.

It is like a social unawareness disease, a kind of handicap. So you always cheer for him, hoping this time he will be spared and you could watch a simple funny show in peace.
