Without culture, and the relative freedom it implies, society, even when perfect, is but a jungle. - Albert Camus

When I was younger I thought advertising people should be shunned from and avoided at all cost. Now that I am more mature and have experienced a decade and a half working with these "people" I know i was wrong. They should be taken outside and shot.

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

..and as I was a yuppy marketing and advertising executive for the better part
of a decade, I am not really impressed with stories of selling your soul to the devil...

When I was younger I thought advertising people should be shunned from and avoided at all cost. Now that I am more mature and have experienced a decade and a half working with these "people" I know i was wrong. They should be taken outside and shot.

But that's just my opinion of course , and I hope nobody actually follows my advice ( no i don't ) as they are just people doing their job (which is to poison our minds, shoot them on sight) and as I would never dream to call for violence ( do the worst you can, use any heavy appliance you can get your hands on) even when we are talking about advertising people (yeah, people, right, stop pretending they are human) I will ask you now to disregard this whole paragraph.

Advertising is legalized lying." - H. G. Wells
Marketing is the art of showing you what you can buy. Advertising is the art of making you want to buy things you don’t want to buy.
Advertising is the greatest art form of the 20th century." - Marshall McLuhan

The main beef I have with the advertising world is the basic fact they are the masters of mind manipulations and are not shy about using that skill in the most atrocious ways. Selling something you don’t need is quite hard, as it is a luxury, but selling something you MUST have is very easy, and here lies the rub.

How do I make sure you know, nay, you feel that you must buy something? By making sure you know that this something is going to make you 'complete', that it will fill that void in your soul. What void, you ask? Oh dear dear naïve reader, do not worry, we will create that void for you, and then sell you something to fill it with.

Advertising is the greatest fart form of the 20th century. " - boaz zippor

And here is the key to my violent reaction when confronted with advertising people - they create holes in people. In order to sell you a pack of cigarettes, a new jeans, a new idiotic handheld shiny app device, they must first convince you that you are faulted, flawed, and generally just not good enough.

You are too fat, too thin, too white, too dark, to young, too old, your hair is wrong, your cloths are outdated, your teeth are not pearly white and your phone is just…well it is just a phone. You are just not good enough, I am sorry.

You are sub-par and this is why you don’t have cool friends like the ones we show you in our ads. But, here we are to save you, because if you just buy our product you will be perfect. Well, for the next thirty minutes at least.

Good advertising does not just circulate information. It penetrates the public mind with desires and belief."  - Leo Burnett
An industry which is making sure you feel bad about yourself? Burn it all to the ground, and dance on the ashes in the dawn of a free from lies life. But make sure to gather all those ashes and dispose of them in a secure and safe way, as even the remains of these horrible people are toxic. But then again, that is just my opinion.
Advertising: the science of arresting the human intelligence long enough to get money from it."
- Stephen B. Leacock

The interesting thing about advertising is that research has shown that most people fall for the trick of "confirmation bias" (I usually don’t like saying 'research has shown' as it is like saying 'everybody knows' but there are dozens of them, so you will just have to look the term up) which means they will stop for more time on advertising pages of items they already bought, because it confirms that they made the right decision.

Without this 'post buying' confirmation advertising loses a major part of its appeal. Who wants to own something no one talks about?

Advertising generally works to reinforce consumer trends rather than to initiate them."
- Michael Schudson

If you need to trick someone into buying something and then trick him to think he made the right decision, isn’t that a big hint that this product should have never existed in the first place? I don’t see a lot of convincing needed when we are talking about things you need, or even things you want. My basic rule of thumb is – the more advertising a product has, the less it is useful, effective or needed.

Think about it next time you see ads for something that surround you in a 360 degrees of lies and tricks, printed ads, tv ads, cinema ads, product placement, billboards, flyers, internet banners, social networking, viral video clips

Asked about the power of advertising in research surveys, most agree that it works, but not on them." - Eric Clark
The chances a woman will leave the bar with someone who tries too much to get her attention and convince her he is the best are small. Extremely small. Think about it. Or don’t. and if you don’t, I have this great new product to sell you…
