As a designer I know that design is much too important to be left in the hands of designers.

Italy is the motherland of industrial design. Famous pieces were made in germany, in the us, some even in spain or the nederlands, but no country holds high the flag of design, good design like Italy. It's in the blood. Its in the wine. (like there is a difference between the two in italy…)

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

Alessi - Fabricating Fantasy

In my last year in industrial design school in Milan, we went on a fieldtrip to the most magical spot for any industrial designer, young or old, student or experienced veteran of the design game.
Allesi is the temple in the mountains, where design runs free. A place the few who are permitted to enter the sanctum sanctorium, make regular pilgrimages to seeking inspiration and the recharging of the creative process.

Italy is the motherland of industrial design. Famous pieces were made in germany, in the us, some even in spain or the nederlands, but no country holds high the flag of design, good design like Italy. It's in the blood. Its in the wine. (like there is a difference between the two in italy…)

And if Italy is the motherload, allesi is the golden streak , the diamond batch, their shangrila.

A factory, and a very successful and rich one, which actually, hold on to your hats, puts design and quality above all other arguments. Yes, you have heard me right. A fully artistic, not market based, independent, innovative , profiting factory.

Today, as the level of luxury being consumed by our rapists is larger then ever, you can find a lot of companies who allow themselves to disregard anything for the name of "brand quality" or unique design, but the magic of allesi was both in the fact they were the firsts to actually make it and make it big, and that the modern manufacturing procedures (because Italy is one of the only places in the world where they understand that design without industry is just esthetic masturbation ) , those relatively cheap manufacturing process, and the use of materials like stainless steel and plastic, enabled allessi to do something that no design firm can do today. They brought design to the masses. Real design. Playful, colorful, strange, artistic.

In almost every house I walked into in Italy, there was at least one allesi tool in the kitchen, in the living room, sometime even the garden. I think that every Italian is assigned at birth to one alesi item. There is no other way to explain it. I had three or four. Almost bought the famous phillipe stark juicer, but decided against it because of my strict repletion from cliché's and everybody had them. You could not do a mojito for three years from the moment it was launched without getting a lecture about stark and allesi.

I remember the visit and the experience as a wave of cool breeze, out of the industrious grayness of Milan, the business city, through the green forests , and into the funny fantastic flawless world of applied design.

I remember walking in the showroom and looking at that array of strange objects, some I recognized, some were like mini totems of mysterious lost religions of metal and resine. Slowly, walking through the displayed I came to two inspiring conclusions .

First, that I have chosen well . being a designer kicks ass. Took me a couple of years more to realize that the world outside of the alessi factory was much less forgiving , accepting and ready for some serious fun than I thought.

Second came the understanding that there was nothing in that room which was not functional on the same level it was designed or playful. This was indeed great design. Bestsellers for years, and will probably continue to have their place of respect in the market.

there was thought behind each and every form, there was planning, there was optimization of the streamlined factory line.
It was all I hoped to get in design school, and here it was , all in one room.

All with one name.
Alessi .
