I went to renew my poetic license today, but they said first I need to do an I exam

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

William S Burroughs – Junkie

It takes a formal art education to be able to create alternative realities with such ease and fluid motion of the old typewriter like burroughs. Oh, and a lot of heroine.

My general theory since 1971 has been that the word is literally a virus, and that it has not been recognized as such because it has achieved a state of relatively stable symbiosis with its human host.

burroughs always intrigued me, coming from that Harvard art major and enjoying a lazy life of indulgence in creation thanks to rich parents who understood his need for freedom, enabled him to produce work that is pure of any mental distraction, to create a verbal landscape of bizarre encounters which usually lead to fieldtrips in the outskirts of sanity.

How I hate those who are dedicated to producing conformity.

And the stories. A good writer should have a life as interesting as his books. Ok, maybe that is an exaggeration, too much to ask, especially with books like the ones boroughs wrote, but the myth still stands, you have to be "interesting", to play the part.

A cat's rage is beautiful, burning with pure cat flame, all its hair standing up and crackling blue sparks, eyes blazing and sputtering.

A junkie homosexual in a drab suit who shoots his wife in a William-tel routine gone bad, is a good start. And then you have the books. As I start prying my memory for all the great lines and ideas I met in his books, I suddenly find myself an American teenage girl, actually vocalizing the mantra "oh my god"

I think there are innumerable gods. What we on earth call God is a little tribal God who has made an awful mess. Certainly forces operating through human consciousness control events.

And "oh my god" is the only way I can describe his writing. It is as if hunter s Thompson suddenly learnt how to write, and he is combining his talents with the marquis de sad and the Grimm brothers to create an adult fairytale that will keep you awake for days.

So cheat your landlord if you can and must, but do not try to shortchange the Muse. It cannot be done. You can't fake quality any more than you can fake a good meal.

burroughs for me is like the literary equivalent of Keith Richards. The later one still with us, but both lived longer than they were supposed to, both look like living skeletons, and both have more life in them then any person I know. Now, I can't really testify if burroughs were in clear and sane mind in his later years, but that is just because the last evidence of him being of clear and sane mind was before his seventh birthday when he wrote his first real story. I bet he was more sane on his deathbed then the majority of the population during their life.

Every man has inside himself a parasitic being who is acting not at all to his advantage.”

burroughs was an artist. He used words, both written and spoken as his weapon of choice, his brush, his chisel. When you have an artist using language, the result is always interesting. It is more then a story. It is not poetry. It is not a verbal painting, expressionist or classic . It is something new, something personal, touching, intriguing , it is art.

Artists to my mind are the real architects of change, and not the political legislators who implement change after the fact.
