I went to renew my poetic license today, but they said first I need to do an I exam

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

Chuck Palhaniuk – Urban uber badboy

All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring. "

I like chuck.
And I am not really saying that because I am afraid he will bash my head in with a baseball bat if I say nasty things about him. I know it doesn’t matter and if he really wants to he will bash my head in with a baseball bat for not saying nasty things about him.
See? What's not to like.

No matter how much you think you love somebody, you'll step back when the pool of their blood edges up too close. "

Fight club. I admit. This was my introduction to Palahniuk and I didn’t really survive any of his other books. Couldn’t connect to the style in most of them, and I do think he rights great movies, both in content, in the way of writing, and in the editing which comes prepackaged in many cases. Yes. A rare case where I would rather see a Palahniuk based movie then read the actual book.

But you know what? I think chuck would appreciate it, and even might say I have a valid point. He's not a writer writer. A writer who writes for critics and publishing contracts. He is more of a people writer. Disturbed people, granted, but still people.
And people and movies go hand in hand together.

I like chuck BECAUSE he is not a writer's writer. He is much too smart for that. If the writing world was a classroom, he wouldn’t even be sleeping in the back of the class. He would be out behind the gym smoking a cigarette and looking at somebody fixing his bike. (yes, not fixing his bike, looking at someone fixing his bike. That's part of the chuck charm… looking with a poker face, with an unseen inner struggle between the stereotypical meaning of a bike in my allegory and the desire to have a bike. To be, even for a moment, one of the cool kids he hates so.)

Maybe humans are just the pet alligators that God flushed down the toilet. "

And it is this tension that acts as magnetic force to so many young readers, who are themselves torn between so many options and dead ends, a role model who reinvents himself all the time, usually with great personal cost and sacrifice but still, anything then still. Always flowing always moving always adjusting, like they are. Or at least have to be if they want to survive.

Palahniuk tours a lot among colleges and cultural center and is one of the 'bestsellers' for young Americans looking for an alternative voice, that combines wisdom, even if of dubious kind at times, with humor, with violence, with the rebellion of the human spirit. The perfect speaker for people who are beginning their lives. Well, at least the ones who are actually interested in living a life. A real one that is.

People don't want their lives fixed. Nobody wants their problems solved. Their dramas. Their distractions. Their stories resolved. Their messed cleaned up. Because what would they have left? Just the big scary unknown. "

Chuck is the kind of writer who shaves his head before starting each new book, in a zenlike ritual, but as always with a Palhaukian twist. If the Zen monks do it to attain nothingness and to start growth from emptiness where it has space to flourish, chuck admits he does it to "become ugly" so he doesn’t have to worry about being ugly. He knows he is. And this is where he gets the first germs of the story, from a point that is not empty at all, it is just down. Under the floor. Worthlessness as a fuel. You have to admit that is a nice twist, Palhaukian or not.

Masochism is a valuable job skill. "

Palahniuk for me is more of a symbol. Of what America can be. For good or for worse. For bloodshed or for simple life. The best example to immortalize this image is the episode of Anthony Bourdain's 'No Reservations' where he asks chuck Palhaniuk to show him around the local delicacies of Portland on his visit there. Chuck takes him to a doughnut shop.

A anarchist doughnut shop called voodoo doughnuts. Yes an anarchist doughnut shop, that sell side by side the double bacon pancake doughnut and a Nyquil doughnut (the 'speedball combo' is the Nyquil doughnut with a side of caffeine infused doughnut., oh, and for those of you who don’t know Nyquil, it is the reason why when you cough you see pink elephants. Over the counter but highly effective syrup…)
