But there IS something extremely haunting in the way she sings, that is covered in feminine fragile toughness and a breaking voice, rugged enough to be real and soft enough to be touching, and which knows when to crack just in the right second, like a real blues woman.
The two videos I want to share here are songs she didn’t write, and because of that, you can see her real talent shine and overflow over the known structure.
The first is pride and joy by Stevie ray Vaughen, which gives Raitt the liberty to go wild for a bit, and oh you can see her go go go. Like johny winter's long lost sister…
this clip is from the Stevie ray Vaughen tribute concert and his spirit is smiling as he is clearly helping to guide her slide with a strong and confident sound only a few chosen ones share.
The other one is the famous duet with john lee hooker, I'm in the mood. I have absolutely NOTHING to say about this amazing collaboration of titans. Just listen.
(Just one small comment, when you play with john lee hooker and it is YOUR guitar that sounds mean…you got something good going…)
