Music is nature's language. What it is telling you is to shut up for once and listen.

Bonnie Raitt has a country feel to her music, but it is like a sugary frosting to something deeper, some itch that can be scratched only with long slide movements over an eager guitar neck, an itch that no matter how much you try to ignore is like a paper cut on your soul

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

..and as I was a yuppy marketing and advertising executive for the better part
of a decade, I am not really impressed with stories of selling your soul to the devil...

bonnie raitt - White queen black roots

She's white. As a lily. Freckly redhead above any doubt. But it seems she does have some very strong black roots, because he sound is as far authentic as a sweating worker in the cotton fields, and her blues is as real as the cries of slaves in the belly of a big wooden ship taking them from their homeland never to return.

Bonnie Raitt has a country feel to her music, but it is like a sugary frosting to something deeper, some itch that can be scratched only with long slide movements over an eager guitar neck, an itch that no matter how much you try to ignore is like a paper cut on your soul, and no matter how melodic you want to make your song, is always present in the undertones, in the intention, in the solo when the muse is allowed to fly away, to spread its wings and express its inner most secrets.

I would rather feel things in extreme
than not at all."

Acoustic, electric, it doesn’t matter. It is her sound. It seems as if the guitar itself has a slur, a kind of chord progression swagger that sends you back to the strong sun, to the chains and mint julep, to a different time.

Maybe it's because I know she is a woman, but I swear I hear something feminine in her blues, something more yen then ying, (or is it more ying then yen? Never remembered which was which, but then again we all know in the end it is the same…)
In honor of our dear bonnie I have actually coined a new phrase.
Totally Raittous.

Sometimes I`m more true when I`m up onstage than I`m able to be in my regular life. It`s not as exciting to be at home, but I`ve got to learn how to make that work, and then I will be an ordinary woman."

To be used when seeing a female guitar player with huge balls and a sound to match. (btw, here in Bangkok it's much easier finding female guitar players with huge balls, but they don't play very well.)
And then there is the singing. If Crosby said she is his favorite singer in the whole wide world it means something. And even if I don’t really agree and have some other favorites, I will not fight with him on that. After all, he is Crosby.

But there IS something extremely haunting in the way she sings, that is covered in feminine fragile toughness and a breaking voice, rugged enough to be real and soft enough to be touching, and which knows when to crack just in the right second, like a real blues woman.

The two videos I want to share here are songs she didn’t write, and because of that, you can see her real talent shine and overflow over the known structure.

The first is pride and joy by Stevie ray Vaughen, which gives Raitt the liberty to go wild for a bit, and oh you can see her go go go. Like johny winter's long lost sister…
this clip is from the Stevie ray Vaughen tribute concert and his spirit is smiling as he is clearly helping to guide her slide with a strong and confident sound only a few chosen ones share.

The other one is the famous duet with john lee hooker, I'm in the mood. I have absolutely NOTHING to say about this amazing collaboration of titans. Just listen.
(Just one small comment, when you play with john lee hooker and it is YOUR guitar that sounds mean…you got something good going…)
Totally Raittous.
