If a recording-tape manufacturer takes you as their spoke person , showing that they can catch all the range even for YOUR voice, it means you are doing something right.
The only thing better than singing
is more singing."
What it means on another level completely is that you are main stream, or at least known enough in the mainstream to be considered a marketable brand, and for a jazz singer that is the final seal of approval. Ella was a household name. She was more than a brand, and she didn’t need no approval from no mainstream people, I can tell you that.
Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong"
If you listen to her early recording which are amazing, and then listen to the older ones you will find something wonderful. The new ones? even more amazing. She started at the top, without even seeing anyone else, and then for fifty years kept climbing, and climbing, learning, opening herself, listening, stealing, working, working, working and then working some more.
I stole everything I ever heard,
but mostly I stole from the horns."
It was a development that can be heard in the steps taken between decades, between record companies, between partners, you can feel the evolution taking place, from an amazing singer to Ella. With a big big capital E.
Once, when we were playing at the Apollo, Holiday was working a block away at the Harlem Opera House. Some of us went over between shows to catch her, and afterwards we went backstage. I did something then, and I still don’t know if it was the right thing to do - I asked her for her autograph.”
How was that possible? Because she was humble, yet strong. Accepting, yet demanding, learning all the time, but also making sure people go out of their own will and accord to that spot where she wanted them to be in. where everybody is comfortable enough to feel at home, but not too comfortable as to be without tension and a bit of repressed energy. She was good at that, and anyone who played with her thanked her for it.
She brings out the best in everybody, making everyone work that much harder to keep up with her."- Andy Williams
Ella was a great performer, other than the learnt ability to use her voice as just another instrument in the orchestra. Or maybe two or three of them, and the soul in the singing... she had the charm of a performer and her voice was luring you in to listen closely, what does this voice has to offer ? What is that magic?
I know I'm no glamour girl, and it's not easy for me to get up in front of a crowd of people. It used to bother me a lot, but now I've got it figured out that God gave me this talent to use, so I just stand there and sing."
It was a magnetic pull that audiences worldwide were delighted to feel, no matter what age, no matter what background. For the jazz purists she was pure jazz, but for the common garden variety music lover? She was ELLA. And she was good. Mind numbingly good. Ahhh.. Ella.
Coming through the years, and finding that I not only have just the fans of my day, but the young ones of today -- that's what it means, it means it was worth all of it."
