Music is nature's language. What it is telling you is to shut up for once and listen.

There are a lot of great blues singers, all of them full of soul, all of them with amazing voice, (and all of them look like your auntie, rather than the sexy slim famished slutty singers they try to sell you in pop music) so what makes etta james so special?

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

..and as I was a yuppy marketing and advertising executive for the better part
of a decade, I am not really impressed with stories of selling your soul to the devil...

Etta James - The unstoppable

I really prefer not going blind, if it is all the same to you, but if I already went blind, it wouldn’t be all that bad, as long as I could still listen to Etta James.

There are a lot of great blues singers, all of them full of soul, all of them with amazing voice, (and all of them look like your auntie, rather than the sexy slim famished slutty singers they try to sell you in pop music) so what makes etta james so special?

She sings a very eclectic repertoire which is a big plus, as it gives us a chance to hear an amazing blues singer perform bob Dylan songs, leonard cohen songs, and of course the whole black music array of gospel, spirituals, jazz and of course, blues blues blues.

I wanna show that gospel, country, blues, rhythm and blues, jazz, rock 'n' roll are all just really one thing. Those are the American music and that is the American culture."

Maybe that is really her secret, being a fully fledged American singer and not a blues singer per se, it definitely helps.  And you have to like her reasoning for that wide range of music  that she sings : " I sing songs that people need to hear".

And it doesn’t really matter what type of music Etta is singing, it is always her , it is always that warm strong voice, the voice that is layered with pain, with joy, with understanding, with the sheer force of nature, force of life. It is always good to hear Etta sing. If only the fact she reminds me what life is all about.

Much more than just a blues singer who tells me how bad things are and how sad she is, Etta really does restore my faith in human kind as she shows me the gamut of feelings we all share, the spectrum of what life is all about.

But the truth is I don’t think about it that much.
She is just great and that's it.
Now shut up and Listen.
