Music is nature's language. What it is telling you is to shut up for once and listen.

Other than being the smartest band around, or at least the one with the most classical musical education around, jethro tull in general, and ian Anderson in particular had one particular thing that I love – they were comepletly crazy.

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

Jethro Tull - Crazy Carols

Some of you might wonder why is jethro tull under the 'words' part of the music section, and wonder you should. Always good to wonder. But other than making you wonder there is also a logical explanation. First, I really didn’t find any other possible category I can put jethro tull under, and second is that at around the middle of my third poetry book, when petty critical friends harassed me to write non-rhyming poetry as what I write is not 'real' poetry , it dawned on me. I write jethro tull lyrics. Ian Anderson doesn’t know it, but it is true. Well, as true as anything a poet might say…

When you're falling awake and you take stock
of the new day,
and you hear your voice croak as you choke
on what you need to say,
well, don't you fret, don't you fear,
I will give you good cheeeeeer.

Other than being the smartest band around, or at least the one with the most classical musical education around, jethro tull in general, and ian Anderson in particular had one particular thing that I love – they were comepletly crazy.

He's watching me watching you
watching him watching me
watching him watching."

Bonkers. Bouncing of the walls with a wide grin and strange eyes. If there is one thing I learnt on this earth is that you should listen to the crazy ones. If they are not right, at least they are never boring.

Really don't mind if you sit this one out
My words but a whisper, your deafness a shout
I may make you feel but I can't make you think
Your sperm's in the gutter, your love's in the sink

Jethro tull did not have songs in the standard sense of the word, or in the normal sense if you like. They created small compositions of arranged light hearted lunacy with poetic prose and almost rhyming rambling rants, the product of seriously delirious delightful dreamy eyed maestros of magical music. you see, that's what happens when I listen to jethro tull too much. Their whole bard-like county fair rock'n'roll experience is like a drug that activates my verbal glands, and secretes words of waxing wonder.
And THIS is why they are in the 'word section'
And THIS is why I should really stop now.

Everyone's saved, we're in the grave.
See you there for afternoon tea."

One last thing. Flute. Yes flute. Automatically raises every music to levels of frolicking half goat gods.  I can't think of any better example of musical border crossing as this flute in distorted guitar world, and Ian Anderson doesn’t really know that borders exist so you don’t really feel any effort being made behind that monumental playing.

I don't think music should be easy to listen to, I think music of all kinds should require an effort for everyone involved.”

Without that flute they would not have the same prestige as 'smart' music and a sophisticated group, without that flute they would not be jethro tull. Without that flute the modern music world would not be the same.

For me, that flute is a milestone of modern popular music. a flute. I have seen bands try to bring in a flute to rock music in the decades that followed, but it wasn’t even funny. I guess the magic happens only when you press that flute to the lips of a mad man. And as I said, when a mad man speaks, listen to the words.
