Music is nature's language. What it is telling you is to shut up for once and listen.

little Johnny, when the devil came to make a deal just tipped his cowboy hat a little forward, looked straight at him with a crooked albino eyes,  and said : well….you see here devil ol' boy, I ain't no Charlie Daniels and this bottle neck here is no fiddle I tell you that. Now move back from the amp

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

..and as I was a yuppy marketing and advertising executive for the better part
of a decade, I am not really impressed with stories of selling your soul to the devil...

johnny winters - Whiter shade of pale

The story says that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil on the famous crossroad. When I listen to Johnny winter I can't help but think some racial thoughts, also socio-economical but mainly racial. The poor black guy sells his soul to play better. The pale white guy? I don’t think so…looking at Johnny winter today? He is a bag of bones but still alive, not matter what hell hounds he injected in his marble white veins all these years.

It seems to me that little Johnny, when the devil came to make a deal just tipped his cowboy hat a little forward, looked straight at him with a crooked albino eyes,  and said : well….you see here devil ol' boy, I ain't no Charlie Daniels and this bottle neck here is no fiddle I tell you that. Now move back from the amp before I plug in or you will feel the wrath of winter on your skinny red ass.

Everybody was tellin' me that I had to do something different, and I kind of agreed that I did need to vary it a little bit. I still love some rock 'n' roll too. "

Yep. A white guy in a black man's world has to be tough. An albino? You can only imagine…whiter than a lily, nastier than a rattle snake, and with the power of the lightning and the storms of winter, he came upon the people, and he slid his message on to us without discounts and without remorse.

There is something different about a Johnny winter shuffle. Once the neck starts warming up and the strings are lubricated with vibrating inspiration, the rhythm is not only carrying forward. But does so in such a way it seems you are running circles around yourself in a whirlpool of distorted notes. In these cases there is nothing to do but to let go and go down with the ship.

When I started workin' with Muddy.
That convinced me that I could get away
with doin' the blues.

I used to love his long slow jams when I was younger, and always admired the calm complexity of this controlled auditory suffering. I just grew out of whining songs so the whole genre doesn’t do it anymore, so once the singing starts my brain just goes – ok, she left you, she took the bottle left you the broom. Ok. Shit happens.

Now snap out of it and stop that moaning and crying. She was ugly and was stealing from you while you were sleeping, so better off without her. Enough.

But then he starts softly sowing some notes into a long tormented solo, decorating it with a small slide movement to accentuate an idea, with a fast run through of small peaks just to go down again with a long vibrating bending of each and every string of our soul. When the guitar is the one doing the whining I REALLY  don’t mind…

And It is not blues as we know it. It is definitely not rock or anything in that family. it's Johnny winter. It's what Stevie ray wanted to be.

It is shinning white. So white it went the whole three hundred and sixty degrees and came out in the other side, on the black part of it all. It is desecrated with years of drugs and alcohol. It still has the same old cowboy hat cover white hair, and it is the meanest ballsiest sound you have heard.

Not a big fan on his singing though.
On one hand, with such guitar force who needs the singing, but on the other hand, could have gone the crossroad way and ask for a voice to make his picking. Just saying…
