Snapping at eternity and capturing life in small pixels is the fastest most efficient way to lie the truth.

..and as I was a yuppy marketing and advertising executive for the better part

David Lachapelle - Glitz & Glamour

I was never a big fan of david lachapelle. I am however a huge fan of his creative team, set designers, production manager, makeup and wardrobe people etc. they do an amazing job producing mind blowing images one after another.

People say photographs don't lie, mine do."

I have tried to find out how much of the final product is lachapelle's work and how much is his crew, but never managed to find a clear answer. Now, finding talented free thinking visionaries to work with you is indeed a talent, and this is something that lachapelle definitely learnt from his old mentor Andy Warhol, but between that and being a great photographer there is still a big distance.

My work is about making candy for the eyes. It’s about grabbing your attention "

Looking at lachappele's portfolio you soon realize that If you take out the production value and the glitz factor, you will end up with very mediocre photography, and not very interesting which is the worst crime, but then again why would anyone want to take away the production value and glitz factor of such amazing pieces of….yes…. I am going to say it….art.

I was working in this very bombastic style. I didn’t really know about style. I didn’t think about it: I did what I was interested in, what I was attracted to, what I was drawn to.

I was drawn to color, and I was drawn to humor, and I was drawn to sexuality and spontaneity. It was all really intuitive. I never really thought, “Well this is the style…

It is probably lachapelle's experience as director, both for music videos and documentaries that gives him this perspective and team based production value, and indeed a lot of the photos look like stills from a movie. A very colorful crazy choreographed crazy movie , but still a movie.

So much so , that a couple of years ago lachapelle sued the popular singer Rihanna as scenes from her music video seemed to be taken directly out of a lachapelle shoot, not copied but of direct influence. It takes a huge ego like lachapelles to think he can trademark a 'style', and for me it is just one more piece of evidence his work might be art but the art part is just a by-product of its commercial value, again, something he learnt from Andy Warhol.

My work is about making candy for the eyes. It’s about grabbing your attention.

Even though my work is appearing in magazines I am trying to make a large picture. I want my photographs to read like a poster.

But in the end of the day Lachapelle's work is nothing less than art. Maybe not your normal garden variety art but still art. Maybe commercial art, but still art. Part of the thing that makes it 'art' is the fact it does look like he had almost complete artistic freedom to create what he wanted, and that is the basic ingredient you must have if you want to create anything that is even close to art.

Lachappele has exactly the opposite approach to photography then me,  which might explain his huge economic success, but that does prevent me from really loving the art he produces, no matter how much I admit it is art and have learnt to appreciate it.

What can I do, for a relatively straight man it is just too plastic perfect glamorous grandiose and over the top, like only a new York gay fashion icon and advertising brand name can be.
But david lachappele has the perfect answer for that problem :

If you want reality take the bus. "
