Snapping at eternity and capturing life in small pixels is the fastest most efficient way to lie the truth.

He was a strange guy, this Mapplethorpe, and he used it to climb to the top of his game, not being burdened by that enormous weight of that ultra-gay exhibitionist twisted black and white soul of his.

of a decade, I am not really impressed with stories of selling your soul to the devil...

Robert mapplethorpe - Poet provocateur

Robert Mapplethorpe was, how shall I put it gently, obsessed with sex. Not that I can blame him, but it is one of those cases where you don’t really need a psychology degree to understand that he was not playing with a full deck. I would even go as far as saying that if it wasn’t for his unbelievable raw talent, he would be someone I would not want to be associated with.

Not that I don’t like sex. I do. As a married guy I remember sex fondly.  But it was a full blown obsession with Mapplethorpe and that just makes you boring after a while. Unless of course you are a genius. Or at least an idiot savant. Haven’t figured out which one was Mapplethorpe.

If you take out the series of just sex photos. You start seeing the clues to what made Mapplethorpe so popular. Never before has anyone shot obscene photos of flowers, never before did a photographer manage to make nude photography seem both sexy and precisely cold in the same shot.

My lifestyle is bizarre, but the only thing you need to know is where the darkroom is. "

I don’t think I am more uptight that the normal person on the street, probably a lot less, but I still prefer , from all his work, the flowers. That oppressed suppressed esthetic animal sexuality that pours out of every petal in black ink on a flat bed of paper, more sensual then any human body, more enigmatic then any mona lisa smile. And I think Mapplethorpe knew exactly what he was doing, even when he was putting himself down and trying to be even more 'bad boy' than you thought.

I am obsessed with beauty. I want everything to be perfect, and of course it isn't. And that's a tough place to be because you're never satisfied."

As a photographer he is nothing special. I have seen much better. I have done some which are better. He wasn’t the technical genius, and his signature look was almost constant throughout his career, sitting idly on that fence between fashion and art, between art and smut, between obvious to unexpected.

Sell the public flowers... things that they can hang on their walls without being uptight.

No, it wasn’t in the photography that he excelled. It was in the art that was the source of his creation, that inner voice most people would ignore, hide, keep for themselves. He created art and there was no space for any outside voices in his head, only his own voice, his own truth, his own way.

I don't know why my pictures come out looking so good. I just don't get it. "

Mapplethorpe was one of his kind. Thank god for that. He was the most perfect Mapplethorpe there is. For good and for bad. For holy art and for demonic lust, for pure aesthetics and unpure thoughts. For art. For us.
He might not be satisfied, but we , when confronted with a Mapplethorpe, usually are.
