Snapping at eternity and capturing life in small pixels is the fastest most efficient way to lie the truth.

The parkeharrison couple seem not to be bothered with such puritan views and what they create are small fables of photography, small iconological representations of an idea, of a concept, of a message. Almost a comic book type of simplistic language in grainy black and white.

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

Parkeharrison - Social surrealism

When I first saw the parkeharrison photographs I discounted them as "art", almost discarded them without paying too much attention. They looked so….pictury. Pictorial would be the right word but the feeling was more 'pictury' if you know what I mean.

I am not a big fan of staged photos, and always feel a little bit cheated as it usually is far from what I see as the truth, something a photograph is supposed to, or at least aim to, at least some of the time, catch. I am a bit old fashioned that way.

I am also not a big fan of creating a picture that tells a story in a more-than-necessary obvious way, and I do like the subtle way stories hide in the details and just wait there for us to notice them.

The parkeharrison couple seem not to be bothered with such puritan views and what they create are small fables of photography, small iconological representations of an idea, of a concept, of a message. Almost a comic book type of simplistic language in grainy black and white.

I want to make images that have open, narrative qualities, enough to suggest ideas about human limits. "

But this is exactly what makes me write about them, and forces me to admit I misjudged them at first site. That simplicity, that brutal honesty bordering on naïve storytelling. Bordering, right….it is well planted inside naivety.  They are naivety. And that is refreshing when you think about it. Some are the equivalent of a pun, always looked down on, but always entertaining.

I use nature to symbolize the search, saving a tree, watering the earth. In this fabricated world, strange clouds of smog float by; there are holes in the sky."

The world of art has always looked down on illustration techniques and visual language, but the world of art is full of hot air jackasses with white wine glasses and masticated opinions which I rarely pay attention to, so why start now?

The illustration type photography of the parkeharrison couple is not exceptional, it is not Avant-guard, it is not even perfect in execution, and still I bump into so many photographs which try to emulate their style and their way of bringing forward some food for thought.

Why? Because it works, because it is out there on the verge of art, playing with illustration techniques and being passed around as small black and white slivers of notions, reminders, acknowledgments.

These mythic images mirror our world, where nature is domesticated, controlled, and destroyed. Through my work I explore technology and a poetry of existence. "

These can be very heavy, overly didactic issues to convey in art, so I choose to portray them through a more theatrically absurd approach."

The parkeharrisons, a married couple working side by side for decades have a view of the world that I can easily relate to, and their message is always about man's place in the universe, in our world, in his own life, something we all have to confront sooner or later, and many have tried to discuss and to teach.

I strive to metaphorically and poetically link laborious actions, idiosyncratic rituals and strangely crude machines into tales about our modern experience. "

In their simplistic, honest almost childlike approach to the subject , parkeharrison breaks apart the subject into small visual sections, mini-kuans of photographic talent. Take a second. Dive inside them…it is worth it.

My photographs tell stories of loss,
human struggle, and personal exploration
within landscapes scarred by technology and over-use…. "
