George sands once wrote: "Charity degrades those who receive it and hardens those who dispense it". a sentence which brings the knee jerk reaction of what what what, but hides an extremely important and relevant truth.
The fact George isn’t really George but the baroness of dudevant (no relation to Lebowski) just makes the quote even harder to digest, as a baroness who is opposed to charity is not really that much of a rarity in this world.
But once you overcome these first misconceptions and look at what is being said, you understand, that like the man and the fish story, here lies the true solution of the worlds miseries. (Or at least the ones we are directly responsible for)
Charity does indeed degrade those who receive it. But it is not their fault. They never wanted charity. They wanted help. They wanted a shoulder to cry on and somebody to hold on to in the storm.
Charity is what we call the act of giving under duress while confronted by the inability of others to help themselves. Very few people like charity. It is like a moral tax, a penalty for not being completely blind to the suffering of others.
And that is why it makes the dispenser, the giver, hard with the years. Paying that tax, giving those alms, and still you see…still you know what is going on. If I paid my coffers shouldn’t I at least be able to sleep at night?
What would happen if , god forbid, we come to a situation where people will be actually happy to support each other, to give a helping hand, a supportive word, where there is a common sense of responsibility, a shared fate we all know we are facing , one and all, rich and poor, young and old, man and woman.
Don’t do charity.
Don’t play that payoff game to clear your soul.
Be part of something bigger than your wills and wants. Something bigger than your comfortable survival in this world.
You might say it is a much heavier toll to pay, you might say you don’t have the time or resources.
You might say a lot of things. Or you might do something, instead of spending your days running after a bucket full of moon and your nights trying to come up with rationalizations why you really can't. really.
You might take it upon yourself to make sure that the future is better for everyone around you, everyone who is , want it or not, part of your life on this earth.
There are a thousand reasons why you can't do that, I know. You are busy, and you are tired, and first you have to take care of yourself and your family.
And let's face it, you don’t really want to see the people you are 'helping'. You give your thirty pieces of silver and you really don’t want to know anything else.
Or you can get up and find somewhere you can be truly helpful.
Make a real contribution for the development of society , of the individuals who make those faceless masses you 'help' in remote control.
Most chances are that once you start that process, it will dawn on you, the simple oh so obvious fact that it is you who is getting the help you never knew you needed, not the people you are supposed to be helping.
By building something.
By being fruitful and flowing like the sun at midday.
By being .
Why don’t we make our next goal, to create a society where charity is not relevant anymore? not needed. there is support. there is help. there is no charity.
Building together, helping each other as we stride forward with a new found pride of a finally human race.
