Weekly rant 04.3.2012
Ok, I can't keep it in anymore; it really really really crawls up my derriere when people keep on telling people to be themselves. No, please, no no no no, I know you people, please don’t be yourself. Be somebody else, anybody, be somebody better.
The distance between trying to find your individual path in life and being a spoiled brat who needs to be accepted on all he's or hers defects is as far as the distance between goos steps and burning books. Very very close.
And the best example to show I am not wrong, not that I need an example, this is my private weekly rant and , thank go, I can say whatever I want, but it so happens I do have the perfect example. It's called America. Not the America you see in suits and smiling blond fake news, but America you see in the daytime TV, the people who watch daytime TV.
Don’t be yourself. At least not until you find who yourself is, and what can you do to make that self worthy wanting to be him, and when I look around I see very little 'selves' like this around. Be yourself when you have figured out who are you, what are you doing here, who are all these people and things that surround you, only then you can start being yourself.
Until then? Find someone who is smarter then you and listen. You don’t like what he is selling? There are millions others like him out there, just mix and choose, pick an opinion, play with it, try it on for a minute, does it feel right? Does it make sense?
It took me thirty five years to start and be acquainted with myself, that long lost pal that I never knew like I should have. And that is after years of active research, wandering aimlessly in the corridors of my mind calling out to myself to come out to play. And a couple of years more until I managed to establish a working relationship with him. Well, working is a big word, but it is not a dysfunctional relationship, which is a good start.
So why do people expect to just "be themselves" right here, right now? Because this is the generation we live in, the quick fix, the micro waved thirty second sort of nutrition, the American idol, the French idol, Britain got talent, three months and you are famous and rich! Career? Work? Path in life? Don’t be ridiculous, you know there's an app for all of these.
So the secret to inner peace and transcendental happiness is to be yourself. Just do what you feel like doing without thinking about it too much. It doesn’t matter, wear a blanket with sleeves as you feed of big buckets and watch porn all day. you are just fulfilling yourself, your true purpose in life. You are yourself.
I don’t know where is the keystroke for a sharp smack over the ear, but I really do wish people would wake up already. Yes, be yourself, don’t be a follower, be a leader, be youself, but for god sake make sure you work on that self. We don’t expect you to be perfect, but in this world, you do get a star for effort, and every step counts.
Be yourself, be responsible for yourself, for your actions, for your words, be yourself.
Be yourself, be all that you can be, not a couch potato, not a slave to the system, think. Read. Listen. Play. Be yourself.
Just before you start being yourself, you are sure you want to do it, right? Being a leader and not a follower means you have to lead, you have to plan, you have to research, you have to work. Being all you can be, or what you could have been as Eleanor Roosevelt used to say, is all encompassing, every second of your life time consuming. It is really being.
Be your self.
If you can.
If you dare.
