The whole world is a stage, but it's easier to fall asleep in the comfortable theatre seats.

I am a big fan of modern dance. Ok, maybe I am not a BIG fan of modern dance. But I am a fan of modern dance. Ok, maybe I am not a fan of modern dance. But I DO appreciate this art form. For a relatively heterosexual man, that is a lot, no?

Dance - Motion and Commotion

I am a big fan of modern dance. Ok, maybe I am not a BIG fan of modern dance. But I am a fan of modern dance. Ok, maybe I am not a fan of modern dance. But I DO appreciate this art form. For a relatively heterosexual man, that is a lot, no?

If you would have asked me five years ago, I would have probably found an excuse not to go see dance shows. You know what, I wouldn’t even bothered to find a good excuse, anything would do, I am busy rearranging my socks drawer would be fine.

I am seeking that dance which might be the divine expression of the human spirit through the medium of the body's movement.”
- Isadora Duncan

But then I started taking photos of dancers and dance shows and found out that it is true was I a fool all these years, but it wasn’t my fault. I didn’t understand. I didn’t realize the art form or what was behind it. not that I am a great connoisseur now, but I have learnt the physical language which is used and suddenly what seemed like crazed people flailing around the stage suddenly makes some  sense.

By having dancers in my studio, I had the privilege not only of having private shows in the comfort of my home, but also the opportunity to talk with the dancers, to get inside their head and to have a private tour of a new world of movement and of live composition I never knew existed.

I am always fascinated with new forms of expression, always on the lookout for an alternative to the arsenal I already own, that of verbal means, visual methods and musical manipulations of human emotions, and dance was a new discovery for me, not only on the esthetic level or the rhythmic one, but the true sense of what one might call body language.

I would believe only in a God that knows how to dance."  ~Friedrich Nietzsche

Today, after working with dancers from most parts of the spectrum, whether it is classical ballet, modern interpretive dance and a lot of crazy butoh groups, I can honestly say that dance should be taught in every school, preferably on the elementary school level, as part of the child's development. The more languages you posses, the better are the chances you will have an outlet to your inner self and not end up a repressed sad drone in the end. I truly believe dance as a language is just as important as grammar, or even maths.

In a dancer, there is a reverence for such forgotten things as the miracle of the small beautiful bones and their delicate strength."  ~Martha Graham

When I think about it now I have visions of white males in clubs, with that famous standard dance of moving your leg in something that is close enough to the rhythm, and maybe adding a head movement  once in a while.

Sad. So sad. And such a waste. Really is. Bring back dancing , salon dancing, salsa dancing, ballet, stomp, anything. Next time your girlfriend or wife tries to take you to a dance performance know this – your sox are ok. Go. Try to learn the language. Try to understand what genial talents are behind those moves, behind the choreography, the amount of discipline, sweat and tears put into every production. It is worth it. trust me.

The dance is a poem of which each movement is a word."   ~Mata Hari

During the years I have hosted several dance shows in my private gallery in Bangkok, and had the honor to be invited to shoot many more. Here is one of the most interesting ones I had the pleasure to document, a performance created and choreographed by the very talented Jitti Chompee
