TV is a medium. but on rare occasions it is well-done, and actually worth watching .

Dali, by being dali, was in himself a revolution of one man, a tsunami of
pure inhibited strangeness
and peculiar mannerism.  Dali created himself in his own image.

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

..and as I was a yuppy marketing and advertising executive for the better part
of a decade, I am not really impressed with stories of selling your soul to the devil...

All in the Family - Brilliant Big

Remember the good old days, when colored were colored, and chinks were chinks?
when an honest man could make a buck from scamming the insurance company, when long hair meant you are a commie?
Ah…. Nostalgia is not what it used to be.

I don’t know why, but it seems that grumpy old men who say things they shouldn’t always works. The grumpy men from the Muppet show, The odd couple, Becker, bless this house, and the latest addition sh#t my dad says… which, as times dictate, has the most literal title, which says it all.

But Archie bunker was different. He wasn’t the first. Not by a mile. But he was my favorite. There was something iconic about him, a bigger than life presence you find only in presidents or ignorant paranoid bigot shipment workers. He was America. Not the prettiest part of it, but still, America as we know it.

Bunker was an equal opportunity offender, even minority groups you would not expect to be victims of bigotry, but Archie has a job to do. No stone left unturned, no un-normal left unscorned. I especially like his view on vegetarians :

It ain't natural, man was put on this earth to eat meet. The bible says so. look it up, jeeze all them old bible people, they were always eating meat. Ever since they found out eating apples was wrong.

And then there was the chair. The throne. The sanctum sanctorium. Yes. THE chair. In every house I moved into, I always marked THE chair, that one chair that is yours, that is just in the right position in the right angle and has the imprint of your ass. And THE chair is a universal symbol and cultural reference. If someone sits by mistake in my chair, all I have to do is say : do you know Archie bunker? And they usually jump up. Well, maybe I did do an Archie bunker face too…

Archie is not different from most people on the street. As he says it so eloquently, he is just looking out for number one. Number two is everyone else. Number three if they are colored…

Why doncha get some chinkypuncture?"

You really can't hate him, and the truth is he doesn’t know any better. But it is ok, because no matter how obnoxious and dark ages he is, there is the inevitable counterpart, dingbat…eh, sorry, Edith.

Edith is the apothem of optimism and happiness, which might be the reason she managed not to stab her husband in the neck with a sharpened spoon all these years. So we have one case of ignorance is hate, and one case of ignorance is bliss.

Archie Bunker: Go ahead, ask your mother,
    *she* believes in capital punishment.
Gloria Stivic: Do you Ma?
Edith Bunker: Well, sure.
Gloria Stivic: MA?
Edith Bunker: Well, as long as it ain't too severe.

And, to add oil on the fire and a stick in the wheels, there is always meathead. I have no idea what his real name his. Can't conjure it up in my memory, but it doesn’t matter. It's meathead. Or 'the dumb polak' if you are in the right mood.

He's right. It is much easier people's names like that. Hey meathead. Yes, sounds good.
Rob Reiner. Brilliant. Young, fresh, in the beginning of a great comic career, which soon enough moved behind the camera at the director chair for the great benefit of us all (spinal tap to say the least)

And meathead was the trigger to so many rants and grunts. It was the perfect duet, the perfect give and take, reason and shout, frustration and a dance of ignorance and fear.

GLORIA: Do you know that sixty percent of all deaths in America are caused by guns?
ARCHIE: Would it make you feel any better if they was pushed out of windows?

It was the new generation against the old, education against ignorance, acceptance against racism, social participation against why should I. and it was fun.

Another thing that I miss from the 'good old days' is just plain old good comic writing, and  if you are making a list, also the perfect acting and timing. And THAT is why there is no laugh track, but a real live audience.

And I mean this very sinseriously."
