As a designer I know that design is much too important to be left in the hands of designers.

I am a practical person. Really. For an artist and poet that might sound like a strange declaration but I am. I believe everything has a purpose, or should have one, and that everything has a meaning, whether we like to admit it or not.

You cant sell news stories that have data and cautious predictions. Where is the panic? Where is the impending doom? C'mon people , give me something to work with here…

Nu-architects - same new same new

i love the new architects. Zaha hadid, liebskind and their ilk.
Just love them. Whenever I look at yet another schizophrenic useless ego-trip construction these guys do I feel they are like a poodle hairdresser in a national IT convention.  They have absolutely no idea why they are there or what they are doing, but everyone is gathering to them trying to get in their pants.

Worse than that, I come from a family of architects (father and brother) so I don’t get excited with every leaf blown on the floor by a passing fart. I have seen three decades of trends and fashions, I have seen horrible finishing and planning concepts appear like mushrooms after the acid rain, and disappear into oblivion as fast as they came, leaving nothing but huge cement glass and steel scars in the delicate skin of cities worldwide.

Even worse, I have been a computer specialist for CAD (Computer Added Design) both in architecture and industrial design, training teams, running laboratories and other boring staff that as a young impressionable man seemed exciting and new to me, and I know exactly what it means getting caught up in the computer design process, and taking programs and applications to the extent of their abilities and then some.

Don’t get me wrong, I think these ideas the "avant guard" architects have are wonderful. Interesting, eye opening, entertaining, expressionist, innovative and other superlative I can keep on throwing at you as they mean very little.
Great ideas. Shouldn’t be built. Ok, maybe shouldn’t is a strong word. We can say….no…shouldn’t is the one.

It is art. I love art. But it is bad architecture. So do it as art. Sounds logical, doesn’t it? There is a reason why things are built in a logical manner for thousands of years. There is progress, there are new materials, there are new building techniques, and there are new drawing and 3d designing techniques. So? If I am obsessed with doing something that is both ugly and dysfunctional just because I have the urge to use all the tools I have, well, that just makes me an idiot, doesn’t it?

Of course, I will never be as big of an idiot as the one who actually pay for my work, but as we already saw many many times, the people who have the money, and the people who have the sense and taste are never the same group of people. It's not a new thing. Rich people got money as compensation for all the things they don’t have. (heart, brain, guts….it's basically the wizard of oz of economics…)

When I was a student I loved the frank gheri's of the world, the zaha hadid's , the liebskinds. They were different , they were inspirational, they were an example of people who made it, who have managed to overcome the money barrier and bring their artistic vision to fruition.

Maybe I got older. Maybe I got more cynical. Maybe I grew tired. Maybe I saw too many of these buildings up close… these days? I love this kind of architecture as much as I love free jazz, and I dare you to find me someone who REALLY loves music and doesn’t throw up at the sound of free jazz.

Thank god we have the gheris, and hadids, and liebskinds in this world. We need people like them. We just don’t need to give them money to build things. That's all. We want their ideas, we want their vision, we want their conceptual ideology, but as a base for something meaningful and practical, not for yet another metal and platinum fart in the landscape.
