China - Classic

There is something romantic about the historic. Usually there is also something historic about our romantic notions, but no matter how you look at it, these two are bonded together like a good yarn.

When something is "old" it has a different meaning, a different image, as if its age is a sign of respect, or at least an added value. But how do we know if something is old? Mainly by feeling, by our emotional response.

Now, when it comes to creating the right emotional response, black and white is a good step in the right direction, and sepia gives it that additional romantic odor of yesteryears, of hand- made prints fading gently as time goes by.

When I shoot, and I always shoot in color as it is all digital these days, and I am a big fan of the digital image, I know which photos will look good in black and white, not as a manipulation of the image but as bringing out her true nature, the true calling, a photo that was meant to be in sepia colors.

One of the best examples was  that small restaurant in tongli, a lovely canal village outside of Shanghai , where we escaped the handful of tourists that came with us, and found one of the few local eateries, where time did indeed stopped decades ago, and it was just screaming black and white, grainy prints.

I just tried to adjust my image to the real age of the image I felt, not saw. In these couple of shots from this restaurant, I think I managed to get close. The fact there is a modern motorcycle in the left corner, just makes it all more surreal, time really being manipulated not by the photographer, but by the place itself.

Just as a nice exercise, and in many digital cameras you can actually see the result on the spot, although I do suggest to do it in your head, as it is so much more enjoyable, next time you arrive to an historic location, a place oozing with the past and endless stories, try to imagine how it would look in black and white. Add a little sepia to that image in your mind, and enjoy. Time travel  was never so easy and , well, fun.
