For many years I was coming back to the holyland for family visits, and over the decades seen the change in what they call life over there, saw the price that every one pays there no matter of sex, religion or ideology. Israel is an exhausting place, where people live in constant stress and fear. It might not be nice to admit it, as the whole country tries to pretend like everything is ok and life goes on as usual, but the faces never lie.
Faces never lie, and I was there to snap that truth into reality, to document the emotions that lie beneath the surface, something that you can try to hide as much as you want, but at that second that no one is looking and you just stare into the nothingness, well, it seems there is always someone looking, and clicking.
The exhibition that was born out of these visits was accepted in mixed reviews as a lot of people took offence to the way I portray Israel and its inhabitants. But I just click, I do not pose the people, I do not engage them , I do nothing to change the situation, I just click.
The fact I see sad faces around, tired people who just want to live a normal life, the fact I take pictures which show very little hope, that is not my fault. I just click. I find it hard to understand why people get offended when I show that people there are sick of the situation and are not happy. It is just human. It would have been scary if all I could show was happy people.
You judge for yourself. I just click. |
