We never see what is under our nose. Sad, but true, one of the side effects of being human and living in the modern world, we just miss everything as we swoop by.
And this is exactly what swooping by life means, not looking out the skytrain windows as you zoom across the city, slicing it on a third floor level, cutting through life itself almost being able to knowck on the office building windows you pass by.
The skytrain just celebrated ten years of existence and it has definitely changed the way the city lives, the way it works, the way it has fun. But people treat it as a convenience, as a mode of transportation, which it is, but they forget it is so much more.
Instead of using the skytrain to go from one mall to another or from a tourist attraction to another, I have always treated the skytrain as a tourist attraction of its on, a unique and cheap item in the must do list of the city.
One of the things I love about Bangkok is the diversity and chaotic nature of this city, this mini universe in the middle of a jungle, a jungle which still changes from green to steel and glass, a small world containing all the colors and forms you can imagine, and all of this is right there in front of you when you ride the skytrain.
It is comfortable. It is. And it did really change the pace of the city’s center, but when I go up those stairs, it doesn’t matter if I am on my way to an appointment or just shopping, I know that what waits for me is a short montage of life, a presentation of the energy of the city, it’s buildings, parks, rivers and canals and I just stare out that window, and smile. |
