Singapore has some amazing history. This is usually the case in central points where everybody wants to land, to rest, to wind down and straighten up, to get your land feet and to meet all the other travelers.
Rising up from a pirates retreat (not sure about the retreat but in my mind it was a pirate haven just waiting for an asian Johnny depp.) to one of the most successful autonomies around, this city state built itself from nothing , and there area lot of stories to be told.
This is exactly what the history museum of Singapore does – tells the story. It is more of a reconstruction of the whole life of the people who built Singapore, the workers, the prostitutes, the drugs, the ruling classes, the whole story.
I will not waste too many words on this museum, but not because it is not interesting or not important. It is, extremely important, and very enlightening from the historic point of view, but you really need the experience, feel the darkness of the rooms, smell the laundry and the cooking and hear the old music coming from an old transistor. And they did an amazing job of recreating this atmosphere. Highly recommended.
And as always in Singapore, if you are already in the museum, which is located in the middle of Chinatown, there is a great restaurant just down the street. |
