ONE SONG

Going through the music
of my life again
I look for notes that soothe my soul
the chords that used to make me whole
the soft, soft words on young tongue roll
their echoes still remain.

Going through the music
of my past bright shining star
the love, the hurt, the party scene
the songs through thick
the songs through thin
I think I once knew what they mean
but now it seems so far.

Going through the music
of the things I left back then
I look for them like in the hay
of music pretty for a day
and in the end to my dismay
I finally refrain.

Going through the music
of the days I don’t recall
I suddenly to my surprise
find the long forgotten prize
of magnitude and awesome size
one song and that is all.
Going through the music
of my life's old tears and fun
I know by now it's just one song
that's truly yours, that does belong
to that old soul from far and long
and you need just this one.

Going through the music
of things that I don’t miss
I listen to the one I know
and in my heart it vibrates so
all my worries leave and go
and I am now at peace.

Going through the music
of the things that are the truth
you need not look so hard my friend
in every new exciting trend
you need just one, your heart to mend
and once you found that single note
that dream, that some old talent wrote
of angels' choir or a rusty old guitar
words of wisdom, a bridge too far.
You'll know it's true, you'll know it's right
as howls of wolves in dead of night
as ripples in the pond expand
of some forgotten crazy band
as strings and bows and tubes of amps
flicker like the old street lamps.
And in your heart you know that this
a music like a mother's kiss
and all you need is just this one
chord of a world that's just begun
to sooth your soul,
to make it all
okay.
